چکیده

Abstract Mine tailings (MT) waste valorization in construction materials can be one possible solution because they may allow an alternative for some applications as important contribution a more circular economy. The aim of this work was to study the feasibility using sulfidic mine tailing production building such ceramic roof tiles. introduction 5, 10 and 20% MT tiles promoted improvement on final properties these materials. use 20%MT has decreased firing temperature from 1150º 1050 ºC, hence promoting energy savings lower costs. Properties density water absorption were improved. Firing shrinkage, many times responsible cracking, also decrease with and, way, improve rate. formulation achieved highest value strength lowest temperature. For effects sulphates' emission (SO 2 SO 3 gases) upon firing, proposed involving their reaction through condensation, providing afterwards sulphuric acid process by-product. high sulphide processing could viewed potential safe management particular tailings.

Recycling of Mine Wastes as Ceramic Raw Materials: An Alternative to Avoid Environmental Contamination

Solid waste management has moved to the forefront of the environmental agenda. Nations are considering restrictions on packaging and controls on products in order to reduce solid waste generation rates. Local and regional governments are requiring wastes to be separated for recycling, and some have even established mandatory recycling targets. However, industrial and everyday activities continu...

Application of a life cycle assessment to compare environmental performance in coal mine tailings management.

This study compares coal mine tailings management strategies using life cycle assessment (LCA) and land-use area metrics methods. Hybrid methods (the Australian indicator set and the ReCiPe method) were used to assess the environmental impacts of tailings management strategies. Several strategies were considered: belt filter press (OPT 1), tailings paste (OPT 2), thickened tailings (OPT 3), and...

Preventing acid mine drainage from mine tailings

Mining activity always has high impact on its surroundings, being waste deposition the cause of multiple and complex problems to the environment. One of them is Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), causing acid water percolation through large areas in the mine site. Portugal was a prosper tungsten producer from the beginning of the XX century, having its apogee during World War II. Nowadays there are mill...

Processing Capability of Apatite-Mullite Glass-Ceramic Materials for the Production of Dental Restorations

Introduction: There is currently significant interest in all-ceramic dental restorations. A potential non-metallic material for such restorations is an apatite-mullite glass-ceramic that could be processed to shape using different processing techniques. The aim of this study was to assess and evaluate the ability of an apatite-mullite glass-ceramic material to be processed using three routes: l...
